It’s the final week of the 2021 season. Despite challenge with Covid outbreaks throughout the country, it looks like the AFL is going to be able to successfully navigate their way through the season, even if that means another Grand Final away from the MCG.
Round 22 was a good one as we went 7/9 with our tips. West Coast were no good against the Dockers and their season looks cooked, while the Bulldogs were upset by the Hawks in a very surprising result.
The Bulldogs will need to bounce back this week, and if results don’t go their way, they could find themselves outside of the top four which is a pretty rough result for their finals campaign given the excellent season they have had. They come up against the Power on Friday night in an exciting clash to kick-start the round. While it’s a huge game for the Dogs, it’s also a massive chance for the Power to finish in the Top 2. If they can achieve that, they’ll get home finals throughout the finals series which could be an enormous boost for their premiership dreams. It’s all to play for!
We follow that up on Saturday night with another classic as Geelong take on Melbourne for top spot! Both teams have been exceptional this season and deserve the minor premiership but only one can finish on top! For us, its the Cats that are the team to beat. They’ve had the depth to cover injuries all season, and they’re going to be tested again in the coming weeks after crucial injuries to half-backs Tom Stewart and Zach Tuohy. Zach Guthrie has filled the void nicely and as long as their mids and forwards continue to fire, then they won’t be exposed down back. Precision with their foot skills will be the key to unlocking the Demons backline. Bombing it long won’t work with twin towers Steven May and Jake Lever patrolling the defence, so the Cats will chip the ball around until they can find the right moment to dissect the defence and hit up their forwards. If the Cats can break even in the middle, and control the influence of big man Max Gawn, then I think they have the forward power to kick a winning score.
In other games, incredibly the Hawks start 10.5 point favourites against Richmond. What the? Yes the Tigers hav been poor, and the Hawks have won three in a row, but the Tigers were still in premiership discussions until recently! Surely that’s a great line to back Richmond to finish the season with a win.
Another bet we’re keen on is the Bombers to whack the Pies. Essendon are now virtually a lock to play finals after a comfortable win last week, while the Pies were hopeless against the Lions. Collingwood are a mess off the field, and not much better on it. Keen for the Bombers to belt them and carry that momentum into their finals campaign.
One other game worth mentioning is the bottom-of-the-table clash between Adelaide and North Melbourne. This game would be more fun if the wooden spoon was up for grabs, but North have that one locked up. However they aren’t as bad as that, and have proven themselves to be more than competitive in recent weeks. Adelaide pushed Melbourne for a little bit last week, but the off-field dramas surrounding Tex Walker haven’t helped them in what has been a poor season. They have a few young players emerging but still carry a lot of dead wood. Kangaroos to finish the season with some momentum.
