2021 AFL Round 17 Betting Tips

AFL Toby Greene

It was a tough week of AFL betting with a few massive upsets during Round 16 action. The reigning premiers Richmond were humbled by the lowly Gold Coast Suns in prime time, before ladder leaders Melbourne were knocked off their perch by the rising Giants. GWS are now into the top eight, at the expense of the Tigers, as the finals race is thrown wide open.

Our Round 16 betting tips only went 2 from 4, so we’ll be looking to bounce back this week for Round 17 action.

It’s going to be a classic on Thursday night with the Power hosting Melbourne. Another loss here for the Dees and suddenly they’ll be under pressure to even hang onto a top four spot.

The Power are slight favourites and at home they are always hard to beat. Ollie Wines (picutred right) is on track for a Brownlow Medal and he’s been supported all season by the likes of Travis Boak, Karl Amon, Dan Houston and big Charlie Dixon. They cover all bases and when they get it right, they are hard to stop.

Melbourne also tick all the boxes, with strength all through their spine. The key will be nullfying the influence of Max Gawn. If Scott Lycett can break even, as Shane Mumford did last week, then that brings the Power midfield into the game.

Melbourne’s defence is rock solid, but Port have a quality attack of talls and smalls that can kick enough goals, while at the moment, I don’t think he Dees have the answers up forward at the moment.

There’s a couple of other great matches in Round 17.

Essendon should be too strong for Adelaide on Friday night, while the Blues will be looking for an upset against the Cats on Saturday. However it’s the Sunday matches that provide a lot of interest.

Firstly, the Giants covering the 17.5 line against the Suns looks the best bet of Round 17. Yes, the Suns were very good against the Tigers last week, but before that, they were pretty poor. Consistency is not going to be the strength of this young team. Meanwhile, the Giants are in the top eight after knocking off the Demons. They are not going to blow that by dropping this game. They have class all over the field and are starting to get some players back from injury. I expect the Giants to cover.

The Dogs and the Swans should be a beauty, with the in form Swans looking to keep it close, and that’s followed by the Tigers and Pies in the unusual Sunday twilight time slot. The Tigers will be livid after dropping the game last week against the Suns, and if they don’t respond here, it’s season over. Dynasty over. They have SO much on the line here, you have to expect them to be roaring to cover the 9.5 line.
