2021 AFL Betting Tips – Finals Week 2

AFL Toby Greene

Week 1 of the 2021 AFL Finals has seen Sydney and Essendon eliminated from contention with the remaining six to live to fight another day. With two big semi finals coming up, we’re looking forward to another massive weekend with our AFL Finals Week 2 Bets outlined below.

The story of the weekend was the charge against GWS gun Toby Greene for making contact with an umpire. Greene was found guilty and ruled out for three weeks which ends his 2021 finals campaign, and possibly the hopes of the Giants. They have been a much better unit with Greene in their team, and while their midfield has plenty of depth and talent, they might struggle to kick a score against the Cats on Friday night in Perth.

The Giants will also be without Tom Green in the midfield through injury so with Tim Taranto likely to shift forward, it does expose their middle slightly. The recent return of Stephen Coniglio has been promising, but he’s not quite the danger of previous seasons. So a lot will be on the shoulders of Jacob Hopper and Josh Kelly, as well as big Shane Mumford in the ruck.

The Cats are certainly wounded and have copped some injuries this season, but Zach Tuohy may come in this week ro provide some stability and run to their half-back line. Mitch Duncan was excellent in his return last week – it was a ridiculously good effort for his first game back from significant injury. However it appears that Patrick Dangerfield is playing with a hand injury which is not ideal.

Geelong have some issues up forward as well with Gary Rohan the one under pressure after a poor showing last week. Expect Esava Ratugolea to come in and provide a target up forward as well as support in the ruck.

The Giants would’ve fancied their chances but the Toby Greene suspension will be a major blow to their hearts and hopes. I expect the Cats to come out firing and blast their way into the prelims.

In the other semi final, the Dogs will travel to Brisbane to take on the Lions. Home ground advantage is a big factor but at anywhere else in Australia, you’d have to fancy the Bulldogs here. They have been one of the supreme teams of the competition this season, before a bit of a dip in form in the final weeks of the season which cost them a top four spot. They went to Launceston and were far too strong for the Bombers, so should be confident of taking on the Lions here. The Dogs are getting some miles into the legs of Adam Treloar and Josh Dunkley, which gives them great depth through the midfield. Aaron Naughton was fearlessly launching at the ball last weekend, and it’s hard to see Harris Andrews going with him in the air.

The Lions are also in good shape with their personnel however Melbourne were pretty comfortable winners in the Qualifying Final. They also have a strong midfield, and their advantage may come in the ruck where Oscar McInerney should have a big advatange over Tim English or Lewis Young. If he can get hands on the ball and give first use to his mids, that will go a long way to the Lions winning his content.

However I think the Dogs are starting to peak at the right time and they have been the stronger team this season. Dogs for an underdog victory!
